Regal Hotel Hong Kong 🏨 Should I Shell Out?

The Regal Hotel Hong Kong Review (2020) – An Honest Account

Due to the rather unprecedented events of 2020 we’ve found ourselves living out of a suitcase for the majority of the year so far… and May 2020 has brought us to the Regal Hotel Hong Kong.

After a successful and happy stay at Eaton Residences Wan Chai Apartment we took our bags one stop east from Wan Chai to Causeway Bay and The Regal Hotel.

With prices in Hong Kong dropping rapidly we fancied a changed of scenery and got a smart deal for a lengthy stay.

For reference we stayed in the SUPERIOR QUEEN ROOM which you can find on booking.com.

Where is Regal Hotel Hong Kong

Regal Hotel Hong Kong is located right in the thick of Hong Kong island in the rather hectic Causeway Bay.

The hotel is super accessible from the Hong Kong MTR. Just get off at Causeway Bay exit F1 and you are within a matter of minutes from Regal Hotel Hong Kong as you’ll see on the map below.

ADDRESS – 88 Yee Wo Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

ADDRESS FOR LOCAL TAXI DRIVER – 富豪酒店銅鑼灣香港

If you are hoping to stay on Hong Kong island and location is a factor for you, then you won’t do too much better than being in the heart of Causeway Bay.

Although busy, you are close to many popular attractions which include:

  • Happy Valley Racecourse (race day every Wednesday during the season)
  • Times Square
  • Hong Kong Convention Centre
  • Hong Kong Stadium

There is a reason Hong Kong island is the most expensive part of Hong Kong… it’s because of things like the above. You are right in the thick of the action.

Location wise – it doesn’t get much better but be warned, it is super crowded.

The Rooms at Regal

As stated above we stayed in the SUPERIOR QUEEN room which comes in at a whopping (for Hong Kong at least) 25 square metres!

Regal Hotel Hong Kong is a 5 star rated hotel. Does the room provide a 5 star experience, debatable.

There is little to complain about in truth, the bathtub is a welcome addition and again, not super common on a budget when looking for accommodation in Hong Kong.

The room also boasts a small seated area by the window which is a nice touch, although not particularly comfortable to work from!

There is little wow factor compared to the Eclat Hotel in Beijing for example that takes your breath away. In truth though, the Eclat comes in far more expensive.

The Regal rooms are absolutely fine – everything worked, WiFi was strong and the TV had a vast array of foreign channels as well as locals ones.

Only one plug socket (located at the desk) was a little disappointing though, especially considering we spent a lot of time in the room working together.

The Staff at Regal

I must admit, this is where Regal slips away from being a 5 star experience.

Bar one exceptional member of the catering team (we tip our hat to Sandy) we found the staff at worst rude, and at best mediocre.

A couple of occasions at Breakfast we were left a little taken aback by a certain member of staff but thankfully that was made up for by Sandy who was exemplary and incredibly friendly.

She remembered our order everyday and would always ask about our current visa situation in Hong Kong and kept wishing us the best. A really lovely touch, someone who left us with a smile upon finishing breakfast!

Speaking of which…

The Breakfast at Regal

Breakfast time (6.30am-10.30am)!

Everyday you are given three options, this is not a buffet:

Regal Hotel Hong Kong Review - Breakfast Time
The “American Breakfast” at Regal minus the friend breakfast
  • Continental (pastry basket and toast)
  • American (the above plus fried breakfast, cereal and fruit)
  • Local (typical local Hong Kong breakfast including congee and noodles)

On day 1 we plumped for continental but on day 2 we discovered you get basically everything from the continental in with the American breakfast.

We therefore found a nice balance after a couple of days which included fresh fruit, cereal, toast and pastries alongside coffee and orange juice.

Fried breakfast everyday was too much so we chopped and changed depending on our day ahead.

On the whole breakfast was fairly decent, although on the busier days, the staff absolutely struggled with running around!

There was a clear difference when it was empty which thankfully for us, was most days.

The Gym at Regal

A plus point – the gym was decent.

Located on the B3 floor this was fully equipped with most things you’d need for either a cardio or muscular work out.

There were showers also included, water, towels and of course lots of hand sanitizer!

Sadly due to COVID-19 we never got to experience the rooftop pool which we heard was a great inclusion.

Regal Hotel Hong Kong – Should I Stay?

Why not, but it depends on your budget.

We actually struck a good deal to stay at Regal, cheaper than our previous residence at Eaton and the benefits were:

  • More spacious
  • Bathtub
  • Bigger gym
  • Bigger breakfast

Everything is pricey on Hong Kong Island and compared to other places we were pleased with the deal we got, that said. Hong Kong no doubt boasts many stronger 5 star experiences (you just have to cough up for it)!
